Paper artist and founder of PeiPer Art School, Pei Li shares about her daily creative routine, world building in her art school and what the meaning of craftsmanship means to her.
A paper artist, founder of an art school and mother—Pei Li wears several hats at once. She begins her day with a cup of coffee and a notebook by her side. Filled with brainstormed ideas and momentary inspirations of sights and sounds around her, Pei Li takes this time as a moment for herself, grounding her mind and headspace before she sets off for the day.
As an artist whose primary art medium is paper, sustainability and circularity sit deep in her ethos of craftsmanship. Each commission is painstakingly crafted, taking root in the wild forces of flora and fauna found in nature.
Once its tenure is over, each piece and sculpture is brought back to her studio, taken apart, and re-used for the next project or as materials for her students to work with. For Pei Li, the end result is not necessarily something of utmost beauty, but rather one with intention and a story behind it.
A haven for discovery and exploration, PeiPer art school broadens her students’ horizons, teaching them to find the beauty in everyday things.
A simple egg carton or plastic bottle makes way for infinite possibilities in class, with the kids taking home a newfound perspective for materials and the creative process in transforming something old to new.
